Heal Hemorrhoids and Constipation the Yoga Way

“Norman, I have a very serious problem. Bleeding hemorrhoids. Pain so bad that I am afraid to go to the bathroom. I just returned from the third doctor to say my only choice is immediate surgery. I had surgery before and the resulting pain was so bad I just can’t go through that again. Can you help me?”

“Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t deal with the cause, did it?” I said.

Jose Antonio shook his head.

“The good news is that you can heal these bleeding hemorrhoids fairly easily with yoga and diet.”

Jose Antonio frowned. “Is there bad news?”

“The bad news is that you have to make a commitment. You can’t just piddle around with yoga like you have been doing, showing up every now and then, expecting great returns with very little investment.”

There is a saying in yoga that Pain is the big stick because It really gets your attention.

And so it was with Jose Antonio. “I’ll do whatever you say. Just tell me what to do.”

The best way to deal with this is to go all out. Right now as much as you want to heal, the fear of more pain on the toilet is creating more tension which makes it harder to evacuate and this is aggravating everything. So we have a vicious circle going.”

The Key to Healing Yourself with Yoga

1 – Quit doing those things that cause and aggravate your constipation and hemorrhoids

2 – Begin doing those things that will reverse and heal your constipation and hemorrhoids.

Between group and private yoga classes, Jose Antonio attended 10 sessions a week. He followed the diet, and by the fourth day, he reported bleeding had stopped, swelling down, and pain almost gone. At the end of two weeks he reported no more symptoms. A month later Jose Antonio said he had no sense that he had ever had a problem.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, start with the two things that will most quickly give you relief:

1 – Flax Seeds to soften the stool, reverse constipation, and allow the feces to more easily pass through the inflamed area without creating additional pain or bleeding.

2 – Legs-up-the-Wall Yoga Pose to reduce swelling/congestion and improve circulation to the area. (Photo below)

With these two practices, you are immediately on your way to healing.

Flaxseeds, More Moisture and Fiber
As people get older, it is very common for the colon to get drier. So along with drinking a lot of water, fresh juices, and eating a lot of juicy fruits and vegetables, get fresh, whole flaxseeds and finely grind them up. Whole flaxseeds will work but you won’t get as much nutritional benefits, like Omega 3 oils, etc. that you will with ground seeds. Already ground seeds are not fresh and not recommended. Add a teaspoon or two of flaxseeds to a glass of water or juice. Allow time for the seeds to absorb the liquid and then drink 5 to 8 times a day until the fiber bulk gives you the needed easy passage through the anus. You can experiment with dosages.

In addition to ground flaxseeds, you can soak black raisins, figs, dates or any dried organic fruit in water, milk or juice for 8 to 12 hours and drinking to produce great, moist bulk for your colon. Any of these can be blended into a liquid drink.

I have found people who do not particularly like milk or black raisins are often surprised at how delicious this drink is.  Yogananda said this drink was good to increase Vital Strength. Also see Yogananda’s Brain Nourishing Drink.

Legs-up-the-Wall Yoga Pose: Spend extra time in the legs-up-the-wall pose to reduce pressure and improve circulation in the anal areas. This pose is very specific to reduce and reverse varicose veins, and helps to reduce prostate congestion and enlargement. This is a modification of the ShoulderStand pose. While the benefits are not exactly the same, the Legs-up-the- Wall Yoga Pose has the advantage that you can stay in it for much longer periods of time than you can in the ShoulderStand. How much should you practice this? The more frequently done and the longer held the better. 

Practice a complete yoga class with relaxation, breathing and meditation to improve circulation, flexibility, and strength throughout the body, as well as to give you the mental strength to stay on the program.

Now it is time to see what you have to do to quit doing those things that create and aggravate the problem.

Eliminate all refined, processed, chemicalized foods that create constipation. No white flour, rice, rolls or bread. No white sugar. No coffee, black tea, caffeine, sodas, carbonated beverages, alcohol. For the time being no meat, chicken, fish, lamb, pork. After your hemorrhoids have healed completely,  if you feel the need to occasionally have some meat, or fish or chicken, have a large raw vegetable salad afterwards so the meat, which has no fiber to move it through the colon, will be assisted in moving along by the raw, fibrous salad.

Many years ago Paramahansa Yogananda advised not to eat white flour products. He said that white flour acts a a glue in the intestinal tract trapping the toxins and not permitting the needed elimination of the poisons. He also said that constipation is the most dangerous disease.

Since then the food industry has created many more tempting white flour and other refined, unnatural goodies that are detrimental to your health.

Eat fresh natural whole grain foods. Try to eat more raw fruits and vegetables within your ability to digest them.

So many think that constipation is something that just happens to them with age, like getting gray hair.  Not true. Poor choices created the problems and good choices can reverse/heal them.

All this advice is recommended to help reverse Acid Reflux/GERD. These three problems,  Constipation, Acid Reflux, and Hemorrhoids, are all interrelated so that what helps to heal one of the conditions will also help to heal the other two.

Hi Norm, Good article….I had surgery on my hemorrhoids in 1988….also had a fissure repaired. Had an old school doctor…told me to use a rounded candle to maintain elasticity. It worked…did not stand on my head (if you remember). Still suffer from acid reflux when I abuse myself. Hope you and yours are well, love and peace, Christ

Hi Christ, Welcome to my site. Sorry to take so long getting back to you, but I have been looking for info on “Had an old school doctor…told me to use a rounded candle to maintain elasticity. It worked…” I have not found an explanation and am not sure what this is or how it works. If you have the time and the desire, I would appreciate it if you would explain this for anyone who might be helped by this.

I am sorry that you still suffer from acid reflux. I need to write about solving that condition since so many readers have asked for help with that. Of course the unpopular part of healing Acid Reflux is to stop consuming stuff that aggravates the condition.

My worst condition is that my naturopathic Doctor says my pancreas is blown. My feet swell and I am treating myself for prostrate swelling . I eat too much meat . I have a juicer, a yoga mat and a lot of lack of commitment which is up and down. I do love yoga and the relief is wonderful from the exercises. I would like very much to reduce the swelling, edema?, in the bottom part of my feet .

Hi Kendall, Doing the legs-up-the-wall pose will certainly help you to reduce the swelling in your feet, as will everything else mentioned in this post by improving eliminations, and circulation.
