Yogananda’s Brain Nourishing Drink

Isn’t it wonderful when we find something that is not only delicious, but good for us also?

Then when we find out that it nourishes the brain cells, that’s an extra incentive to go for it.

Especially as we are getting older, anything that helps to improve brain function has to get our attention.

One of my favorite yoga recommended drinks is ground nuts in freshly squeezed  orange juice.

Early on in my study of yoga science I became aware that fresh fruits and nuts were at the top of the lists of healthy foods because:

  1. Highest in prana (life force).
  2. Lowest in irritating residues.
  3. Peaceful vibrations for meditating. Do not irritate or dull the mind or body.
  4. Cleansing to the cells.
  5. Very nourishing.
  6. Easy to digest.

When I got to Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings I found that he recommended finely ground nuts to be added to fruit drinks, water, and salads. He advised the fine grinding because people did not chew nuts well enough.

Yogananda said that mixing finely ground nuts into freshly squeezed orange juice made much more nutrients available than taking nuts and orange juice separately.

He said that this drink was especially nourishing to the brain. HOORAY!

How I Make It

Start with Whole, Fresh, Raw Nuts. Most readily available for me are Walnuts, Almonds, Pecans.

I grind the nuts first since orange juice is less stable and begins losing Vitamin C as soon as it is cut open and the juice squeezed. So we want orange juice from fresh oranges prepared to be drunk right after squeezing.

I finely grind nuts in a small coffee bean/seed grinder.

I squeeze the oranges and pour the juice and all of the pulp into a glass. Since I use the simplest hand juicer, it is easy to keep all of the pulp.

I immediately stir in 2 or more tablespoons of the freshly ground nuts. AND DRINK.

Even though the vitamin C is dissipating rapidly, I drink slowly to enjoy the delicious flavor as long as I can.

This is not only delicious, refreshing and energizing,  but very healthy for the whole body, and a great brain food to help your brain to function much better.

I hope that you will enjoy this drink as much as I do.

I wish you a healthier, clearer, sharper mind…………….Norman

Note: Yoga Science evaluates food more by its pranic value than by the vitamin and mineral content that our scientist use. So fresh fruits and nuts are considered to be in the highest pranic category. The longer fruits are stored and the further away they are from their ideal ripe stage, the weaker the pranic energy. Needless to say, modern food processing tends to run roughshod over prana. Yoga Science, as well as Ayurveda, consider any other form of orange juice, –such as canned, bottled, concentrated, frozen, enriched, flavor enhanced and reconstituted– to be almost completely devoid of life force/prana.

Hi Norman,
I´ve kept meaning to write and thank you for this! I´d been drinking a green juice each morning, but my body was letting me know it wasn´t wanting it first thing. Since I´ve been making the OJ with ground almonds I feel much more lively in the morning and don´t feel at all hungry until lunchtime. Thanks. Hope you´re doing well.

Hi Norm
Love your tips on everything.
I must try the recipe with nuts and juice.
I have inflamatory bowel disease with a long time and I am getting arthritis in my knees lately. I have a ruptured disk. Could you recommend a recipe that would help please.
Kind regards

Hi Geraldine,

I am not sure what you mean when you ask for a recipe, so you let me know if my answers are not complete.

For your “inflamatory bowel disease” I recommend my previous post Lose Weight and Rejuvenate Yourself with Triphala. Many Triphala users have written comments on that their IBS has been cured with Triphala.

For your arthritic knees, see my “Reduce & Heal Your Knee Pain” post. You will be inspired to practice these techniques more if you will read the comments at the end of the post. In this post you will see that I recommend an anti-inflammatory diet.

For your ruptured disk you can practice my free “Self-Heal Your Back Pain Yoga Video Pt 1”. At the end of the post you will find links to Parts 2 and 3.

I wish you great success. Please let me know if you have any questions.
